November 1st,1864 holds a significant place for Marylanders, and here’s why…

In August 1619, a ship arrived in Point Comfort, Virginia. Aboard the ship were 20 enslaved Africans, the first on record to be brought to the English colony of Virginia. In 1634, Mathias de Sousa was the first black to arrive in St. Mary’s City of Maryland. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863. However, the proclamation wasn’t applied in Maryland, and slavery was left intact. It was only on Nov 1, 1864 (hence 11011864), a new constitution was adopted after a narrowly contested vote thanks to 375 absentee ballots cast by soldiers.
